Like Simon Sinek says, we should know the Why, What, and How of what we're doing.
Because the map is not the territory. By that, we mean that in our modern complex world, the path forward is unpredictable so we'll need to be agile in our thinking. It's like we can see the mountain we want to climb, but the hike to get there will be filled with obstacles and we don't have a reliable map to the mountaintop.
Continuing the mountain/hiking analogy above, if we're going down an unpredictable path to the mountaintop, and we don't have reliable maps, we'll need to be able to explore different routes and be nimble in overcoming obstacles. In times of uncertainty, we'll need to see that every step is an experiment. This is scientific thinking! The Kata approach helps us make scientific thinking a natural reflex.
Practice makes progress! The Kata approach is based on the idea of deliberate practice. Not random practice, but practice that is frequent, focused on micro-skills (starter kata) and aided by corrective feedback from a coach.
